The Whiskystats Price Update for March 2018

In March 2018 the Whiskystats Whisky Index experienced a small setback, the Yoichi 20yo Single Malt reaches new record prices and a Black Bowmore release is now trading for more than 10.000 Euros in Germany too. Here it is, the Whiskystats Price Update for March 2018!

Last month we observed almost 5.300 trades of single malt whiskies. These prices affected 2.950 bottles in our whisky database and averaged to 365 Euros. Of course the most traded distilleries were Macallan and Ardbeg. By far the most traded whisky was the Yamazaki 18yo Single Malt. We observed 69 prices of this whisky alone. On average 390 Euros were paid.

Index Movements

Our main index, the Whiskystats Whisky Index, describes how the value of the currently 300 most traded single malts evolved over time. In 2017 we observed a six month period were this index barely moved at all. Only recently, in January 2017, it finally started moving again. In January and February 2018 this index gained more than 8%.
Whiskystats Whisky Index by March 2018 In March we see that this index has dropped again. The currently 300 most traded single malts lost 2,3% in value last month. One reason for this are the price observations we made for Macallan. Our Macallan index which describes the value development of the 300 most traded Macallan bottlings lost 3,7% in March 2018.
Macallan Index by March 2018 This Macallan index once again shows the drastic price increases some Macallan bottlings experienced over the past two years. Most interestingly we observed a comparable setback in the Macallan prices exactly one year ago. From April to December 2017 the Macallan index then gained more than 40%. So we are very eager to find out whether this price rally will continue or if we finally observe a lasting change in pattern.

Worth mentioning

From all those trades we observed this month there are two which we want to point out here. The first one is the Yoichi 20yo Single Malt. In January 2018 there were 822 Euros paid for this bottle. Now, in March 2018, 922 Euros were paid. This is the highest price ever for this japanese single malt. Just to mention it, only four years ago in April 2014 this whisky was traded for 230 Euros.
Yoichi 20yo by March 2018 The second whisky we want to point out this month is a true secondary whisky market legend. It is the 36yo Black Bowmore of which only 2.000 bottles once existed. It was in July 2017 where this Bowmore bottle was traded in Hong Kong for more than 13.000 Euros. Prices in Hong Kong for this kind of whisky are very high in general and often way ahead of the prices paid elsewhere.
Black Bowmore 36yo by March 2018 In September and October 2018 the prices paid at german based WhiskyAuction.com lied at around 9.000 Euros. The reason we mention this here is that now in March 2018 also the prices outside of Hong Kong went above the 10.000 Euro threshold. More precisely, we now have a price observation of 11.255 Euros which does not come from Hong Kong.
